It seems like students pursuing fashion degrees at SCAD are prepared to lead in the complex fashion marketplace. The School of Fashion Style Lab mentorship program offers select students the opportunity to work one-on-one with industry professionals such as Zac Posen and Catherine Malandrino. And, international media, including The New York Times and Women's Wear Daily, attend and cover the annual SCAD Fashion show 2014 a juried collection of undergraduate and graduate work.
One of the best annual events on my fashion calendar comes every May, First because my birthday always falls one day before SCAD Fashion Show. What better gift than that? When the Savannah College of Art and Design presents its BA show its the best! As part of the yearly festivities, school trustee Andre Leon Talley presents a Lifetime Achievement Award to a luminary in the industry—previous honorees have included Manolo Blahnik, Diane Von Furstenberg, Tom Ford, Vera Wang, and Marc Jacobs. Also, this year Stephen Burrows made an outstanding opening in the fashion show.
The real joy in seeing a student fashion show like SCAD’s is the opportunity to witness creativity without the commercial restraints many professional designers face. Free from the pressure of having to “sell” anything, and enabled by a supportive faculty and cutting-edge facilities, SCAD’s runway served as a rare, unfettered fashion moment.
